| Type and Number of Taxis |
| There are three types of taxis in Hong Kong and these vehicles are the only kind of public transport licensed to provide a door-to-door service to the general public.
Currently, there were a total of 18,138 taxi licences : 15,250 urban taxis (coloured red), 2,838 New Territories taxis (coloured green) and 50 Lantau taxis (coloured blue) in Hong Kong.
Urban taxis are permitted to operate in Hong Kong Island, as well as in Kowloon and the New Territories, while New Territories and Lantau taxis are restricted to operating in the New Territories and Lantau Island respectively. All the three types of taxis can serve the new airport at Chek Lap Kok. |

| Taxi Licensing System |
Taxi licences have been issued by public tender since 1964 to provide the registered holders a right to own and operate a taxi. Since 1994, it has been the Government's policy to issue new taxi licences when necessary, after taking into consideration the demand for taxi services, the financial viability of the trade, and the likely impact of the increase in the number of taxis on traffic conditions. |

| Annual Licence Fee |
| Taxi owners are required to pay an annual vehicle licence fee (i.e. road tax) of HK$3,159 irrespective of the vehicles' engine capacity. |
| |
| Transfer of Taxi Licence |
A taxi licence is transferable through a relatively simple procedure which can be completed within seven working days.
Both the buyer and seller are required to register the transfer in person at a Licensing Office of the Transport Department and pay a fee. |
| Taxi Fares |
Taxi fares are set by the Government and reviewed from time to time by the Transport Department in response to applications from taxi associations. Such reviews take into account changes in operating costs and fares of other mass transport carriers. |
